How Humidity Control Devices Can Help Your Indoor Plants Thrive

14 July 2020 | Humidity Control

If your home uses central heating during winter and air conditioning during summer, it can dry out the air inside your home. This can have detrimental effects on you and your family, as well as your indoor plants.

The only indoor plants that can thrive in the dry atmosphere caused by heating and cooling devices are cacti and succulents. Most other plants need some sort of moisture in the air in order to flourish. If the health of your indoor plants is important to you, you may want to invest in a humidifier or humidity control device.

This is especially applicable to people who are growing plants and herbs for medicinal uses, as well as plants to sell. However, at the end of the day, plants make a house a home and if you want to see your leafy green babies thriving indoors, humidity control devices are the way to go.

Humidity Control Options

These days, a wide variety of humidity control devices are available to you. You can purchase one that regulates the humidity throughout your entire house, or a smaller unit designed to control the humidity levels in a single room. Alternatively, you might want to consider a small vaporizer that you can place near the plants that need it most.

The Best Humidity Level For Plants

Now that you have a humidifier to counteract the dryness in your home, what level should you operate it at? To put things in perspective, most homes are below 30%  humidity, and even cacti prefer 40%. Most of your house plants (as well as your family and furniture) will thrive at around 50 to 60%. You don’t need to resort to guesswork to attain the correct levels. Fortunately, there are easily-adjustable humidifiers on the market that will do it for you.

Group Your Plants

Grouping your plants together can help them feed off each other’s natural moisture and it is a popular method of naturally increasing humidity. However, plants do require a bit of breathing space and should not be placed right on top of each other. And if you don’t want to group them, get a humidifier.
